    PRESIDENT NASSER OF THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC TODAY (FRIDAY) SENT FRENCH PRESIDENT CHARLES DE GAULLE A PERSONAL MESSAGE EXPRESSING THE UAR'S "HIGH ESTEEM" FOR HIS ATTITUDE DURING THE RECENT ARAB-ISRAELI CONFLICT. THE MESSAGE WAS CONVEYED BY UAR FOREIGN MINISTER MAHMOUD RIAD DURING A 50-MINUTE MEETING AT THE ELYSEE PALACE.

    DR RIAD TOLD NEWSMEN ON LEAVING THE ELYSEE PALACE THAT THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC HOPED FOR A PEACEFUL SOLUTION OF THE MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT THROUGH THE UNITED NATIONS.

    THE EGYPTIAN ENVOY SAID - "I HANDED PRESIDENT DE GAULLE A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT NASSER. THIS MESSAGE, WHICH BRINGS SALUTATIONS TO THE FRENCH PRESIDENT, EXPRESSES THE HIGH ESTEEM PRESIDENT NASSER, THE UAR GOVERNMENT AND THE ARAB PEOPLES HOLD FOR GENERAL DE GAULLE FOR HIS COURAGEOUS AND HONEST STAND DURING THE MIDDLE EAST CRISIS.

    PRESIDENT DE GAULLE HAD PUBLICLY CONDEMNED ISRAEL FOR STARTING THE CONFLICT, AND SAID ISRAEL HAD NO INHERENT RIGHT TO RETAIN THE TERRITORY IT OCCUPIED AFTER THE STRUGGLE.

    DR RIAD WAS ON A 24-HOUR STOPOVER EN ROUTE FOR THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY.

    AFTER HIS MEETING WITH PRESIDENT DE GAULLE, UAR EMBASSY OFFICIALS SAID THAT EGYPT WOULD HAVE REGULAR CONTACTS WITH THE FRENCH PRESIDENT AND HIS GOVERNMENT IN ATTEMPTS TO REACH A SOLUTION TO THE ARAB-ISRAEL CRISIS.
