  • Description

In the northern Italian industrial town of Monza, dozens of workers from two different factories have been treated in hospital for what are believed to be symptoms of gas poisoning.

SYNOPSIS: At least 50 workers from the Singer electronics factory have been admitted to hospital after complaining of dizziness, nausea and breathing difficulties. Scientific experts have been working at the factory since last Friday, but have still not identified the poison or its source. A hospital spokesman said five of the poisoned workers were taken to a nearby Milan clinic for more tests. Most of the other workers were released from hospital after treatment, but many still carried sores caused by the poison.

Meanwhile at the Philips factory in Monza, work was suspended after its 400 workers complained of nausea. later, 23 operators were taken to hospital with sores on various parts of their bodies. Italy has recently been hit by two major industrial pollution accidents. Two weeks ago, tons (tonnes) of poisonous arsenic leaked from a chemical company near Manfredonia and on July 10 highly toxic dioxin escaped from a Seveso chemical factory in northern Italy, forcing the evacuation of 730 people.
