  • Description

WEST GERMANY SIGNED AN AGREEMENT WITH YEMEN ON WEDNESDAY WHICH PROVIDES THE ARAB REPUBLIC WITH GBP15 MILLION WORTH OF TECHNICAL AID AND NEW PROJECTS. THE AGREEMENT FOLLOWS YEMEN'S RECENT DECISION TO RESUME DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH WEST GERMANY.

FOUR YEARS AGO YEMEN AND EIGHT OTHER ARAB COUNTRIES CUT TIES WITH WEST GERMANY FOR RECOGNIZING ISRAEL.

FOREIGN MINISTER AHMED KAID BARAKAT SIGNED THE DOCUMENT FOR YEMEN AND GERHARD JAHN, SECRETARY OF STATE IN THE FOREIGN MINISTRY, FOR WEST GERMANY.

YEMEN'S RESUMPTION OF TIES WITH WEST GERMANY WAS CRITICIZED BY SOME ARAB COUNTRIES BUT PRESIDENT QADHI RAHMAN ALIRYANI DEFENDED THE MOVE. HE SAID THAT IT DID NOT CONSTITUTE A DEPARTURE FROM ARAB UNANIMITY ON THE ISSUE BECAUSE NONE EXISTED. HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT WHAT SERVES YEMEN'S WELFARE AND PROGRESS CANNOT HARM AN ARAB CAUSE.
