Zambia's Foreign Minister, Mr. Vernon Mwaanga, warned Tuesday (18 February) that there could be "all out war" in Rhodesia if the current attempts at a constitutional settlement fail.
Mr. Mwaanga was speaking on his arrival in Sydney for trade talks with Australian Government officials.
The Foreign Minister said that he was "cautiously optimistic" that, given good will on both sides, a peace was possible in Rhodesia.
But Mr. Mwaanga added that his Government had supported the armed struggle against the white-minority regime in Rhodesia in the past and would continue to do so. And if the peace talks fail, he said, there would be " no alternative" but to intensify the armed struggle.
He said that Zambia was anxious to avoid such an "all out war" but whether or not this happened was not entirely up to it.
