Background: Spanish Foreign Minister Gregoria Lopez Bravo arrived in London on Wednesday (19 July) for talks with senior British ministers on the Gibraltar dispute. Mr. Bravo began his discussions Wednesday evening with Sir Alec Dougles-Home, the Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary.
Spain claims Gibraltar. But Britain has repeatedly said that it will not transfer her sovereignty over her Mediterranean rock colony against the wishes of the 25,000 people of Gibraltar. A referendum on the subject three years ago resulted in 99 per cent of the population opting to stay British.
The Spanish Foreign Minister's visit to London is in return for the one paid by Sir Alec to Madrid in February for exploratory talks on the Gibraltar issue. During his three days in London Mr. Bravo will also discuss Common Market developments and European security questions.
