Background: Jimmy Connors, of the United States, has returned to Great Britain for his attempt to recapture the Wimbledon title he lost to Arthur Ashe last summer.
SYNOPSIS: In the second round of the Robertson Cup at Beckenham, Connors met the giant Swedish player, Ove Bengston. He rushed through the first set, but in the second found himself on the receiving end of some hard hitting, and was soon trailing 1-5 before he suddenly clicked back into form.
The Beckenham championships are being used by some of the world's top players as a practice run for Wimbledon. Connors said he was happy with his game only the second he's played on grass in a year. The former Wimbledon champion added that he was confident he could win back his title.
Former Miss. World, Majorie Wallace has been Connor's constant companion and is seen by many as the person who has most encouraged him in his Wimbledon fight-back.
Connors says he is working very hard on his new image. In the past six months he's shed 30 pound in weight and is now cutting down on the wild social events he has been associated with in the past.
The final serve from Bengston and Connors wins 6-1, 7-5. Afterwards tennis writers agreed, that the "new look" Connors did look good. He served well and according to most, had that Wimbledon-winning style.
