Background: The flag of the Palestine Liberation Army (PLA) was adorned with Egypt's highest military star during a ceremony attended in Cairo on Monday (3 June) by Egyptian War Minister Ahmed Ismail and Mr. Yasser Arafat, executive chairman of the PLO's executive committee.
Marshal Ismail made a speech in which he assured the Palestinians that the battle with Israel was not over and would not end before the restoration of the "rights of the Palestinian people".
A PLA brigade took part with the Egyptian forces in the October War and distinguished itself in action against Israeli infiltrators on the west bank of the Suez Canal, Marshal Ismail said.
The ceremony was attended by members of the Palestine National Council (PNC) which is meeting in Cairo. On Monday they issued a statement declaring they would only take part in the Geneva peace talks if the creation of a Palestinian state was on the agenda.
