  • Description

During an extensive tour of the Far East, Britain's Secretary of State for war, John Profumo, visited the Commonwealth Cantonment in Malacca Jan 13.

Flanked by Commander-in-chief of the British Far East Land Forces General Sir Richard Hull, and General Robertson, C.O.C. of the 17 Gurkha Division, Mr Profumo took the salute at the camp site. He then inspected the guard of honour.

Later he drove around the partly completed cantonment and was briefed on plans for the biggest Commonwealth Camp in the Far East when completed. The Malacca cantonment will accommodate British, Australian and New Zealand troops stationed in Malaya as part of the Commonwealth strategic reserve.

The Secretary of State for War, who is on an inspection tour that takes him to singapore, Malaya, Borneo and Hong Kong, showed keen interest in the amenities provided at the camp. Planned on modern scale the camp will have its own theatres, playgrounds, shopping centres, hospital and other amenities.
