  • Description

The situation remains tense in the Israeli-occupied West Bank town of Reborn after a third Arab was reported to have been killed during street rioting.

Kamili Abu Remela, 32, died in hospital on Wednesday night (24 March) after a struggle with soldiers from whom he tried to snatch a weapon during disturbances, official sources said. The Israeli army has ordered an investigation.

An 11-year old boy was shot in the head and later died in the town of Abu Dis and a 44-year old man died of a heart attack in earlier rioting.

Youths in Hebron have taken to the streets again and stoned soldiers and set fire to piles of debris in the streets before being dispersed by troops. Their leaders said they were disputing a recent promise by the. Arab Mayor, Sheik Mohammed Ali Jaabari,to the Israeli authorities, to keep the town quiet.

The boy who had been killed, Ali Hussein Afana, was buried quietly in his home village of Abu Dis on Wednesday. Israeli troops sealed off the village, a few miles (kms) east of Jerusalem to prevent press coverage of the funeral. One of the 100 mourners told Reuters the services went off quietly. The mourners covered the boy's with floral wreaths.

Afana was one of three youngsters hit by rifle fire during demonstrations on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho more than a week ago.

The demonstrations, which have been continuing for several weeks, are in protest at a court decision to acquit eight young Jews arrested for trying to hold a prayer service on Temple Mount, the site of two Moslem shrines.
