  • Description

Operation Game Rescue - that's the gigantic tack the Rhodesian Game Department has undertaken. As the great Kariba Dam rises so the Zambesi broadens. Islands, stocked with birds and animals, appear overnight.

The biggest concentration ever in this part of Africa of zoologists, biologists, bird and game watchers and rangers is working hard to rescue these marooned animals.Such is the magnitude of the job it has been suggested that some of the islands be made game centuries.

Further down river below the Kariba, fish are stranded by the rapidly narrowing Zambesi.

For two years, since dam construction began and animal rangers have studied the are intensely. One interesting observation, migrants, previously unknown in this region but attracted by the vast tracts of jungle-cleared land, are breaking their southward and northward journeys. Thousands of European starlings, bound for the Cape, have settled here.

When this GBP113 million sterling dam is finished sometime in 1963 it will hold back the world's biggest man-made lake, 2,000 sq. miles in all. By then over 40,000 people will have been moved and rehouse and many thousands of animals will once again be on safe ground.
