  • Description

A rash of tornadoes, floods and storms struck the south and mid-West U.S.A. over Memorial Weekend (26/27 May) leaving at least 40 people dead in eleven states. Hundreds were injured. Homes and whole townships were destroyed, as the storm system travelled from Southern Michigan to Louisiana and Florida.

At least thirty tornadoes struck. The bad weather started on Saturday night and criss-crossed their way south all through the next day and night.

One of the worst disasters occurred at Brent in Georgis, a town of some two thousand people. The town was virtually destroyed. Eight people were killed there, and about three-hundred homes and businesses destroyed in the path of a tornado a mile wide and four miles long. In Jonesboro, Arkansas, 3,500 businesses and homes were destroyed. Help towards the cost of repairing the damage is being sought from the Federal Government, as the grim task of looking for the missing continues.
