Background: The Foreign Minister of Dahomey, Doctor Emile Zinsou, said in Lagos yesterday (Wednesday) that Dahomey was willing to mediate in the civil war in Nigeria.
He said that the offer was made as one African nation interested in the welfare of another. But he stressed initiative in this direction must come from the Nigerian people themselves.
Doctor Zinzou led a goodwill delegation from Dahomey to the Nigerian capital, Lagos. He and his party returned home yesterday.
The Dahomey Foreign Minister spent four hours in discussion with General Gowon. They are believed to have discussed a suggestion that the Organisation of African Unity should intervene in the civil disturbances.
It is possible this proposal will be further discussed by the OAU at its meeting in Kinshasa next month.
General Gowon is reported to have told Doctor Zinsou that at the moment the civil war is an internal matter created by tribal differences. He said once the rebellion had been crushed he would pursue the task of removing tribal bitterness.
