    THE FIRST TIMBERS FROM THE ROMAN SHIP LYING PART BURIED IN THE THAMES MUD NEAR BLACKFRIARS BRIDGE WERE RAISED YESTERDAY (THURSDAY). SEVERAL RIBS OF THE WOODEN VESSEL WERE SALVAGED AND SENT TO THE ROYAL EXCHANGE FOR PRESERVATION TREATMENT.

    THE DISCOVERY OF THE 19-HUNDRED-YEAR-OLD SHIP NEAR THE BRIDGE A YEAR AGO HAS BEEN REFERRED TO AS A "RARE ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIND." IT WAS UNEARTHED BY ROAD-BUILDERS' EXCAVATORS WHILE WORKING ON THE BLACKFRIARS UNDERPASS.

    THE EXCAVATIONS ASSISTANT AT GUILDHALL MUSEUM, PETER MARSDEN, SAID THE JOB SHOULD BE FINISHED BY TOMORROW (SATURDAY). THE THREE MAIN RIBS RECOVERED EACH WEIGHED AROUND FIVE HUNDREDWEIGHT. ALSO SALVAGED WERE SOME ROMAN POTTERY, ROMAN SHOES AND TWO ROMAN COINS.
