  • Description

The burnt-out hulk of the former liner "Queen Elizabeth" today (10 Jan) lies on her side in Hong Kong Harbour.

Once the pride of the British Merchant Navy - and the biggest of passenger ships - the liner is now good only for scrap.

She keeled onto her side after all attempts to control the fire which broke out yesterday had failed.

The Fire Department in Hong Kong has decided to let remaining pockets of fire aboard the wreck burn themselves out.

But even half-submerger the ship was still so hot today that a spray of water from a nearby fireboat instantly turned to steam as it struck the scorching metal.

An inquiry is to be held into the cause of the fire.
