Background: The official enquiry into the Manchester united plane crash in February opened today in Munich. To bar outsiders a Bavarian policeman sat all day in the corridor outside the conference room in which the inquiry is being held, and photographers were allowed only three minutes for close-ups.

The Inquiry began with a report read by Munich Airport's Chief Engineer, Dr. Warner Goetz, and the chief witness was Captain James Thain, the only one of the survivors to be called, Captain Thain was in command, though not at the controls, of the aircraft at the time of the accident.
Also sitting round the conference table, among others, were Mr. J. Banfield - the air Attache at Bonn-, and Mr. G.M. Kelly - of the Pilot Association, London.
The first day of this two day hearing was conducted by Flight Capt. Reichl, an ex-Luftwaffe Commander. When asked about the conditions of the secrecy Dr. Reichl would only answer that there was no secrecy for secrecy's sake.
