About forty-eight hours of disturbances, including sniper fire and firebombings in the midwest U.S. city of Michigan City, Indiana have prompted state officials to place the National Guard on standby alert. Sunday (July 12) night Indiana state troopers were called to the downtown area to relieve city police after several buildings and a car were damages by firebombs, and snipers shot at firemen. One incident of looting was reported. All of Michigan City's police and fire units were used to quell the disturbance. At least nine persons, including two policemen, were injured, and a total of fourteen persons were arrested.
Michigan City police say the trouble started after three black men were arrested in the downtown area on charges of disorderly conduct. Saturday night. A dusk-to-dawn curfew was imposed. An apparent clam was restored shortly after midnight Sunday night.
