  • Description

The Third International King's Cup Amateur Boxing Tournament began at the Bangkok National Stadium before a crowd of more than forty thousand people.

The Tournament was opened by the recently returned former Thai military leader, Marshal Prapass Charusathiara.

Defending champions, South Korea, fought their way to four victories in four fights.

The opening match began with South Korea's Light flyweight, Oh I'm Suck, fighting Charles Onen of Uganda. And a champions got off to a good start when Oh clearly outpointed Onen for a unanimous decision.

The South Korean's were once again favourites to make a clean sweep of the championships.

Their favouritism was reinforced when the home town hero, Manus Karn-Eur of Bangkok, was smashed to the canvas by South Korea's Lim Byung Jin. The South Koreans were clearly out to emulate their performances in the two previous tournaments in which they won both the individual and team trophies.

The feature of the action packed card was the solitary lightweight bout between Brian Tink of Australia and Venezuela's Franklin Bompart. Tink went down twice for the mandatory eight count in the first round. But the young Australian showed enormous courage to take the fight up the seemingly stronger Venezuelan and pull off a four-one decision over Bompart.
