  • Description

The Israeli Prime Minister designate, Mr. Yitzhak Rabin, told President Ephraim Katzir on Friday (24 May), that he needed two more days before he could announce the names of his new cabinet. Mr. Rabin's proposed government will take over from the caretaker cabinet of Mrs. Golda Meir, who resigned as Prime Minister last month. Mr. Rabin was the Minister of Labour in Mrs. Meir's Government.

Shortly after his meeting with the President, Mr. Rabin told journalists at a news conference in Jerusalem that he had reported to the President that agreement had been reached on the previous night between the three political parties from which it is hoped to form the new coalition government. The coalition will give him a small majority in the 120-seat Knesset (the Israeli Parliament).

Mr. Rabin has had great difficulty in putting together a Government because of the refusal of the National Religious Party (NRP), which for the last 25 years has taken part in Israel's coalition government. The NRP members are refusing to co-operate this time unless laws covering conversions to Judaism are tightened.

Mr. Rabin said that the President had asked him to produce his Cabinet list by next tuesday (28 May), the day after the Jewish festival of Shavuoth, the Feast of Weeks.

A transcript of Mr. Rabin's statement at the news conference follows.
