GOLDBLOOM: "As the work has progressed on the site, we have had to get into the finishing aspect of it and this has involved plumbing and electricity. So these new groups of workers coming on to the site have appeared to be more volatile than the ones with whom we've been working with for the last five and a half months and they have slowed down and interrupted their work. They have apparently cut wires and blocked........pipes and so on in order to create inconvenience. This appears to be a means of protest against an extension of the decree which takes the place of a collective bargaining agreement which was not achieved the last time that the construction industry was in negotiation. There are about 1,200 people in those two groups, but I'm hardly suggesting that all 1,200 are involved in this kind of negative action, on the contrary, we would rather think that it's a small minority."

Background: Workers alleged to be endangering the successful completion of the main Olympic Stadium on time by staging go-slows and committing sabotage, were served a court injunction in Montreal, Canada, on Monday (10 May).

A Superior Court Judge granted the injunction on the grounds that the holding of the Games, due to open on 17 July, was "in grave danger".

The injunction, sought by the Olympic Installation Board (OIB), was served on the unions representing plumbers and electricians, as well as on individual workers at the Olympic site.

If the order to cease go-slow and sabotage tactics is ignored, the unions and men could face imprisonment or severe fines for contempt of court.

The Quebec Minister in charge of the games, Dr. Victor Goldbloom, told reporters that several acts of sabotage, including the cutting of electric wires and the jamming of pipes had been carried out recently.

"The nature of the sabotage is minor, but the effects are significant. When we are pouring concrete and we need a pump and the electricity has been cut, we are held up. Sometimes we have found pipes blocked with lead and this has caused delays," he said.

But the journalists who toured the site on Monday saw the considerable progress that had been made in the past month. Grass in the main arena has been laid and more than half of the 73,000 seats in the stadium have been installed.

The velodrome, where cycling and judo events will be held, and the swimming stadium, are both nearing completion.
