  • Description

Thousands of Nigerian Moslems celebrated the Eid-el-Kabir festival in Lagos yesterday (Monday). The ceremony was climaxed with the sacrifice of a ram by Chief Imam Liadi -- a ritual commemorating the prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his own son.

In recent years, Eid-el-Kabir has been marked by a truce during fighting in the Nigerian civil war. And the first peacetime celebration of the festival drew a particularly large gathering of Moslems to the capital's praying ground.

The festival is traditionally a public holiday in Nigeria, with the Muslim community beginning a day of worship at the open-air praying grounds shortly after dawn.

Animal sacrifice is widespread during the festival. On the point of sacrificing his own Isaac, Abraham was commanded to make instead an offering of a ram -- and it is this offering that is still celebrated during Eid-el-Kabir.
