  • Description

IFALPA NEWS CONFERENCE IN AMSTERDAM; BARTELSKI READING STATEMENT; IFALPA NEWS CONFERENCE IN LONDON; JACKSON SPEAKING (SOF).

AMSTERDAM - MR BARTELSKI:"THE INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE AIRLINE PILOTS' ASSOCIATION, OF WHICH I AM THE PRESIDENT, WOULD LIKE TO ADVISE THAT IN VIEW OF THE FAILURE OF NEGOTIATIONS AND DISCUSSIONS WHICH TOOK PLACE BETWEEN MY ORGANISATION AND THE ALGERIAN GOVERNMENT, IS COMPELLED TO TAKE STEPS WHICH STOPS ALL THE FLIGHTS BY THE MEMBERS OF THE IFALPA TO ALGERIA. IT IS NECESSARY IN VIEW OF THE INCREASING RATE OF HI-JACKING TO TAKE STRONG ACTION TO PREVENT SIMILAR INCIDENTS. IFALPA HAS ASKED THE ALGERIAN GOVERNMENT REPEATEDLY TO RELEASE THE CREW AND TO MINIMISE THE POLITICAL EFFECT OF THIS INCIDENT AND WE MUST ADVISE THAT UNFORTUNATELY WE HAVE BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL AND THEREFORE WE INTEND TO CARRY OUT OUR PROPOSED ACTION APPROXIMATELY IN THREE DAYS TIME. THE CESSATION OF FLIGHTS TO ALGIERS IFALPA MEMBERS WILL TAKE PLACE IN THREE DAYS TIME."

LONDON - MR JACKSON:(READING STATEMENT FROM ALGERIAN AUTHORITIES) "WE HAVE URGENTLY INFORMED THE IFALPA PRESIDENT OF OUR GREAT SURPRISE WITH REGARD TO THE PROPOSED STEPS. THE LAST IFALPA MISSION WHICH ARRIVED ON THE TENTH OF AUGUST WISHED TO LEAVE AGAIN THE SAME DAY. WHILST WE HAD PLANNED FOR A SECOND VISIT BY THEM TO THE CREW AND HAD TOLD THEM THAT THEY MIGHT BE RECEIVED ON MONDAY, THAT'S YESTERDAY, BY A MINISTER. WE INSIST THAT ANY PUBLIC STATEMENT AND ANY EXPRESSION OF DISSATISFACTION WILL NOT CONTRIBUTE ANYTHING TO THE SOLUTION OF THE AFFAIR. ON THE CONTRARY IT WILL HAVE THE EFFECT OF FURTHER COMPLICATING AN ALREADY COMPLICATED AFFAIR."
