  • Description

A solemn ceremony dedicating a new shrine building to the spirits of the late Emperor Meiji and his consort Shoken was observed at the Meiji Shrine on the night of October 31 here in Tokyo.

The new building made entirely of Japanese cypress trees was recently completed at huge expenses as the old building was destroyed in the spring of 1945.

Some 10,000 persons were present at the ceremony and bonfires were built in the wooded shrine compounds.

Among those present at the solemn function were an Imperial Proxy, Prince Takamatsu and high Government officials, besides, of course, many priests.

As the ceremony in an ancient style progressed amid a solemn atmosphere, all lights were put out except bonfires. Darkness reigned. Through the darkness a long line of procession slowly escorted the spirits of the late Emperor and the Empress to the new building.

Thus, the ceremony was finished without a hitch.
