  • Description

Visnews filmed Jan 22 the press conference given in the "Buergerverein" building in Bonn by Lieutenant-Colonel Siegfried Dombrowski who claims to have been second in command of the East-German military counter-intelligence before he fled to West-Germany at a recent undisclosed date.

Though Dombrowski gave startling facts and figures about the size of the intelligence organisation in East Germany - he claimed it employs 60,000 agents, many of whom operate in Western-European countries - his appearance in West-Germany has been completely ignored by the West-German Ministries concerned and by allied agencies. Observers in Bonn believe that Dombrowski gave the press conference to overcome this "boycott".

Dombrowski claimed that the Coordination Bureau which he headed is perhaps the largest espionage organisation in the world, certainly in Europe. Its headquarters are in East-Berlin, where Russian supervisors control the activities of thousands of German agents, recruited on both sides of the East-West border. Dombrowski said that hundreds of West-Germans and inhabitants of other West European countries were recruited at international events taking place in East-Germany such as the annual fair in Leipzig. Many West-Germans joined the spy organisation for fear of jeopardising the safety of relatives and friends in the East-Zone.

Dombrowski - a veteran communist who spent years in Nazi-concentration camps, and after the war received special training in Russia - said he fled to the west after one of his colleagues came under suspicion of having contacts with the west.
