    FOURTEEN PEOPLE, INCLUDING FOUR RETIRED OFFICERS, ARE BEFORE A CAIRO COURT ON VARIOUS CHARGES OF PLOTTING, IN 1963, TO ASSASSINATE PRESIDENT NASSER, PLANNING TO OVERTHROW THE GOVERNMENT BY FORCE, OR KNOWING OF SUCH PLANS BUT FAILING TO INFORM THE AUTHORITIES.

    BEFORE THE SUPREME STATE SECURITY COURT, ALL HAVE PLEADED NOT GUILTY.

    PRINCIPAL DEFENDANT IN HUSSEIN TAWFIK, AGED 40 FORMER PERSONNEL CHIEF OF MISR PETROLEUM (PREVIOUSLY SHELL). HE PLEADED GUILTY TO ILLEGALLY POSSESSING ARMS AND EXPLOSIVES.

    ARMS AND AMMUNITION ALLEGED TO HAVE BEEN FOUND IN THE POSSESSION OF THE ACCUSED WERE DISPLAYED IN THE COURT ROOM. THESE CONSISTED OF THREE RIFLES AND FOUR WRAPPED AND SEALED PACKAGES WHICH, COURT SOURCES SAID, CONTAINED TEN PISTOLS AND AMMUNITION.

    TAWFIK TOLD THE COURT THAT THE GROUP HAD DISCUSSED ASSASSINATING PRESIDENT NASSER. THEY ALSO DISCUSSED ASSASSINATING THE AMERICAN AMBASSADOR IN CAIRO AND BURNING THE CAPITAL'S BUSES. BUT, HE SAID, "THERE WERE MERE DISCUSSIONS, BUT NO PLANS TO CARRY THEM OUT."
    THE GROUP, TAWFIK, TOLD THE COURT PRESIDENT, LIEUTENANT GENERAL MOHAMED FOUAD EL DIGWY, WAS OPPOSED TO THE GOVERNMENT'S ARAB POLICY.

    PROSECUTOR, SALAH NASSAR TOLD THE COURT, "WHEN YOU DELIBERATE, HAVE NO MERCY BECAUSE NO MERCY SHOULD BE SHOWN DEVIATIONISTS, TRAITORS AND AGENTS."
    THE REFERENCE TO AGENTS AROSE FROM TAWFIK'S ADMISSION THAT HE HAD ASKED ANOTHER OF THE ACCUSED TO TRY TO TALK TO THE FRENCH "BECAUSE WE BELIEVE FRANCE IS ONE OF THE WESTERN COUNTRIES WHICH CAN BE USEFUL TO EGYPT." BUT, THIS DID NOT MATERIALISE, HE SAID.
