  • Description

A new university has been officially opened in northern Nigeria.

It's the Jos Compus -- which administratively is part of the University of Ibadan.

The establishment of the campus is seen in Nigeria as an experiment within the government's programme of expanding education facilities.

The university will provide study facilities for about a hundred students in a part of the country which boasts very few university graduates at present.

SYNOPSIS: A new university for Northern Nigeria. It's at Jos, and is administered by the University of Ibadan. The university was officially opened last Saturday -- and its establishment in an area short of higher education facilities is seen in Nigeria as a bold experiment.

Governors of the university wore ceremonial military uniforms for the official opening ceremony. The new university will accommodate about a hundred students at first in courses, which according to the principal, are designed to avoid "narrow specialisation" and to "stimulate the curiosity of the students. Staff and students walked in procession to the open-air ceremony marking the opening of the university.

The University Chancellor, Sir Kashim Ibrahim noted in his address that there is an amazing lack of learning among Nigerians. He said there was no greater vehicle knowledge and information than a centre of learning like that being opened. Knowledge of one another, said the Chancellor, begets understanding. Sir Kashim said the new university was a laudable venture deserving the support of all Nigerians.

Plans for expansion are in hand -- and by 1977 the present roll of one hundred students could rise to fifteen hundred.
