Background: KYALAMI, NEAR JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

Japanese motorcycle manufacturers, Suzuki, unveiled their new 500cc model at Kyalami, South Africa on January 17. The factory is current holder of the world title in this class and will use their new model to try and retain the championships which open on the Kyalami circuit in March (1983). After mechanics had given the new machine a final tuning and warm up world champion Franco Uncini of Italy began track testing. He worked the engine through the gears before opening the throttle to check cornering capabilities at high speed. His fellow Suzuki works-rider, Randy Mamola, rated number-two in the United States, rode the 1982 model for comparative timings. Both men agreed the new machine is faster and easier to handle than its predecessor. The 1983 season promises to be a most competitive one with six riders in contention to win the 500cc championships, including Britain's Barry Sheene who has almost recovered from a near-fatal crash.
