VISNEWS filmed Greek Foreign Minister Averoff being greeted at London Airport Feb 11 by Britain's Selwyn Lloyd. Soon afterwards Turkish Foreign Minister Mr. Zorlu arrived and was greeted by Mr. Allan, Parliamentary Under-Secretary Foreign Office. They had both arrived from Zurich.
They seek Britain's backing for a compromise agreement, on an independent Cyprus Republic, between Mr. Karamanlis and Mr. Mendres, Greek and Turkish Premiers, during their six days talks in Zurich.
The Turkish Foreign Minister, at a celebration lunch before he left Zurich, said: "We are to reach an agreement between Britain, Greece and Turkey. Such an agreement will strengthen the forces of the free nations and will consolidate peace in the Eastern Mediterranean."
Their plan is understood to make Cyprus an independent Republic, in which Britain would have the right to military bases as a member of the North Atlantic Alliance, but not as the sovereign power.
A joint Greek-Turkish statement in Zurich said; "A compromise accord has finally been reached despite considerable difficulties which this problem presents. The cause of the liberty, collaboration, and the welfare of Cyprus have emerged victorious from the test."
This afternoon the two Premiers left by air for their Capitals.
