  • Description

The Algerian President, Houari Boumedienne arrived in the Syrian capital Damascus on Tuesday (18 July) on a surprise visit for talks with the Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad.

SYNOPSIS: As President Boumedienne's aircraft touched down at Damascus airport, a party of Syrian government officials, headed by President Assad were waiting on the tarmac to welcome him. The Algerian President was accompanied by his Foreign Minister, Abdel-Aziz Bouteflika and several other Algerian ministers. After being greeted by President Assad, the Algerian delegation met the Syrian Prime Minister, Mohammed Ali Al-Halabi and the Syrian Foreign Minister, Abdul Halim Khaddam. After the welcoming ceremony the Algerian and Syrian parties drove into the city for talks.

The meeting took place in the Presidential Palace. No official reason was given for the visit but it coincided with the negotiations in Britain between the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Mohammed Ibrahim Kamel, the Israeli Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan and the United states Secretary of State, Cyrus Vance on a Middle East peace settlement. Algeria and Syria are both members of the groups of Arab countries known as the "rejectionist" states which include Iraq, the Libyan Jamahiriyah, and South Yemen.

These countries are opposed to the attempt by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat to find a peace settlement with Israel.
