  • Description

Millions of people throughout India are celebrating the colourful ten-day festival of Ramlila and Dusshera.

SYNOPSIS: The festival itself stems from India's legendary past and illustrates the triumph of good over evil. The tableaux and processions staged over the ten days depict scenes from Rama, the dashing hero who defeated the demon King Ravana, his son Meghnath and brother Kumbhdarna. Effigies of the three villains of the story are prepared and later burnt on top of a bonfire. The procession is usually led by Shehnai players followed by the intricately designed tableaux, depicting scenes from the saga, and trailed by magnificent elephants resplendent in their rich trappings.

The plot of the story revolves around the Lord Rama - one of the central figures in the Hindu religion. Legend has it that he was exiled for 14 years and during this time his beautiful wife, Sita, was abducted by the evil Ravana and his wicked allies. But with the help of a vast army of monkeys and bears, Lord Rama set out on his perilous rescue mission to retrieve the lovely Sita from a terrible fate. He was also aided by his brother Lakshmana, and together they overcame great trials and tribulations to put down their evil enemies.

according to the legend, Rama's final weapon was a fire-tipped magic shaft which he hurled at his enemy. Ravana and his henchmen received their retribution and in a crescendo of fireworks their effigies explode and topple to the ground as the crowds roar their approval. Although the story evolved from the mists of time, it's one that the people of India never cease to enjoy year after year.
