TRANSCRIPT: (SEQ 3) INTERVIEWER: "WHAT IS YOUR REACTION TO THE NEWS THAT GENERAL GRIVAS IS BACK ON THE ISLAND?"

MR. DENKTASH: "WELL, IT APPEARS THAT THIS GENTLEMAN IS THERE IN ORDER TO MOBILISE GREEK YOUTH FOR WHAT HE CALLS A FIGHT FOR THE MOTHERLAND. SO OUR REACTION IS NOT A POSITIVE REACTION. IT IS A NEGATIVE REACTION."

INTERVIEWER: "BUT HE SAYS HE WILL PROTECT TURKISH-CYPRIOT LIVES AS MUCH AS GREEK CYPRIOT LIVES."

MR. DENKTASH: "WELL, THE TREATY OF GUARANTEE AND THE TREATY UNDER WHICH THREE POWERS TOOK THE RESPONSIBILITY OF PROTECTING US, WAS NOT SUFFICIENT TO PROTECT US; MAKARIOS'S WORD WAS NOT SUFFICIENT - SO, WHO IS HE? HE HAS COME TO CYPRUS AT THE HEAD OF AN UNCONSTITUTIONAL ARMY, ILLEGALLY, AND IF HE HAS ANY GOODWILL TO SHOW AT ALL, HE SHOULD REALISE THAT HE IS AT THE HEAD OF AN ILLEGAL AND UNCONSTITUTIONAL ARMY, AND SHOULD JUST LEAVE CYPRUS TO SHOW HIS GOODWILL."

INTERVIEWER: "WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS SUGGESTION THAT THERE SHOULD BE A REFERENDUM ON THE ISLAND?"

MR. DENKTASH: "WELL, I THINK ALL THAT WAS GONE INTO IN 1959, BEFORE ZURICH AND LONDON AGREEMENTS. THERE IS NO REASON WHY WE SHOULD GO IN FOR A REFERENDUM NOW. IF WE ARE GOING IN FOR A REFERENDUM THERE MUST BE SEPARATE FOR TURKS AND GREEKS. A SEPARATE REFERENDUM FOR US BOTH...THAT IS WHAT WE WANT."

Background: MR. RAUF DENKTASH, THE EXILED TURKISH-CYPRIOT LEADER, FLEW INTO LONDON TONIGHT, (WEDNESDAY) FOR TALKS.

HIS ARRIVAL COINCIDES WITH A BROADCAST MADE IN CYPRUS BY GENERAL GRIVAS, THE FORMER EOKA LEADER. GENERAL GRIVAS CALLED FOR A REFERENDUM AS A SOLUTION TO THE CRISIS ON THE ISLAND, AND SAID HE HAD GONE TO CYPRUS FROM ATHENS TO USE HIS INFLUENCE TO BRING ABOUT PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE BETWEEN GREEKS AND TURKS.

SHORTLY AFTER HIS ARRIVAL AT LONDON AIRPORT, MR. DENKTASH MET REPORTERS. HE TOLD THEM THAT HE CONSIDERED THE RETURN OF GENERAL GRIVAS WAS "A GREAT MISTAKE ON BEHALF OF THE GREEK SIDE."
