  • Description

The 50th anniversary of Bleriot's pioneer flight across the English Channel was celebrated on July 26 at Dover.

Part of the commemorative ceremony at Dover was held at the Bleriot memorial - a granite representation of his aircraft which has been laid out on the slopes near Dover Castle, where he landed.

Leading figures in the world of aviation paid tribute tot he famous French aviator, and among those present for the occasion was his widow, 76-year-old Madame Bleriot.

Lord Brabazon, himself a veteran flyer, spoke of Bleriot's flight and of the early days of flying. During the speeches, "Hunter" jets of the H.A.F. emblazoned the sky with a vapour trail in the shape of a huge "H".

A luncheon was held earlier in the town hall, where speakers included the British and French Ministers of Transport, Mr. Watkinson and M. Buron.
