The Indian Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi called on her people to look for a new life style and face difficulties with good humour and cheerfulness when she gave a Year's Eve press conference in Delhi on Monday (December 31).
In a review of world and domestic affairs Mrs. Gandhi vigorously defended her country's recent economic agreements with the Soviet Union but rejected any immediate resumption of diplomatic relations with Pakistan.
It was the Indian Premier's first news conference for 20 months.
She said the agreements with the Soviet Union would in no way impinge on India's non-aligned policies nor its independence in judging international issues.
The agreements were of mutual benefit to India and the Soviet Union and India would equally welcome offers of help from the United States.
I'm much of her speech Mrs. Gandhi dealt with India's economic difficulties and the fierce criticism from her political opponents of inflation and shortages of essential items.
