Background: One of the most lavish welcomes for some time was laid on in the Ivory Coast capital, Abidjan, on Saturday(18 August) for Sudanese President General Jaffar El Nimeiry.
He was greeted as he stepped from his aircraft at Abidjan Airport by President Felig Houphouet-Boigny. In a welcoming speech, President Houphouet-Boigny called General Nimeiry a "peacemaker", who had gained his reputation through real democracy, not acts of aggression.
President Nimeiry brought a four-man delegation with him for his four days of talks, including Sudanese Foreign Minister Mansour Khaled.
A public holiday was declared in the country and crowds of people waved along the flag-bedecked nine-mile (fifteen km) route taken by the two leaders from the airport to the city centre.
After his arrival, President Nimeiry was guest of honour at a dinner at the Republican Palace. He urged adoption of plans for liberating parts of Africa still under foreign occupation.
