    AS SOLEMN RALLY IN DAR-ES-SALAAM, THE TANZANIAN CAPITAL, MARKED THE ANNIVERSARY OF SHARPEVILLE YESTERDAY (TUESDAY). MARCH 21ST IS NOW RECOGNISED BY THE UNITED NATIONS AS AN INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF RACIAL DISCRIMINATION. IT WAS ON MARCH 21ST 1966 WHEN SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE OPENED FIRE ON THOUSANDS OF AFRICANS SURROUNDING THE SHARPEVILLE POLICE STATION DEMONSTRATING AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA'S PASS LAWS, WHICH REQUIRED AFRICANS TO CARRY IDENTIFY CARDS. THE DEMONSTRATORS PLANNED TO ASK THE POLICE TO ARREST THEM BY THOUSANDS FOR NOT CARRYING THEIR CARDS. WHEN THE POLICE OPENED FIRE, 67 AFRICANS WERE KILLED AND 186 WOUNDED.

    MR DAVID SIBEKO, CHIEF REPRESENTATIVE OF THE PAN AFRICANIST CONGRESS IN EAST AFRICA, AND FORMER REGIONAL CHAIRMAN OF VAAL -- THE REGION INCLUDING SHARPEVILLE -- ADDRESSED THE RALLY. HE GRAPHICALLY RECALLED THE EVENTS AT SHARPEVILLE AND THE ARREST OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN LEADERS OF THE PAN AFRICANIST CONGRESS.

    ANOTHER SPEAKER WAS MR NYANGINZE, SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE TANZANIA YOUTH LEAGUE. SEVERAL MEMBERS OF THE AUDIENCE CARRIED PLACARDS DENOUNCING APARTHEID.
