  • Description

SOME OF THE MOST MODERN FIRE-FIGHTING EQUIPMENT IN EUROPE HAS BEEN INSTALLED AT THE AIRPORT AT TOULOUSE, FRANCE, IN READINESS FOR THE FIRST TEST-FLIGHT OF THE CONCORDE SUPERSONIC AIRLINER. THE PROTOTYPE CONCORDE IS SCHEDULED TO TAKE OFF FROM TOULOUSE AIRPORT 23 FEBRUARY, 1968.

THE CONCORDE IS A JOINT ANGLO-FRENCH PROJECT, AND THE FRENCH PROTOTYPE IS BEING CONSTRUCTED AT TOULOUSE BY THE SUD-AVIATION COMPANY. BECAUSE OF THE SIZE OF THE AIRLINER AND THE DANGER PRESENT DURING ANY TAKE-OFF AND LANDING, A HIGHLY EFFICIENT FIRE-FIGHTING UNIT WITH THE MOST MODERN EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE IS ESSENTIAL AT TOULOUSE AIRPORT.

AMONG THOSE WHO WATCHED A TEST OF THE NEW EQUIPMENT WAS THE MAN DUE TO FLY THE FIRST CONCORDE, SUD AVIATION'S CHIEF PILOT ANDRE TURCAT. IN THE TEST, 1 KILOMETRE (0.621 MILE) OF RUNWAY WAS COVERED IN FOAM IN THREE MINUTES SIX SECONDS BY A FOAM-SPRAYING VEHICLE WHICH, IN SPITE OF ITS SPEED, CAN BRAKE TO A FULL STOP IN 15 METRES (16 1/2 YARDS).
