  • Description

The supporters of Juan Bosch are insisting that Joaquin Balaguer employed fraudulent methods to defeat their candidate for the presidency of the Dominican Republic. They pledged a tireless campaign to unearth evidence to prove their case. On Friday (3 June) Bosch followers showed reporters boxes of ballots cast for their candidate that they claim were not counted.

Meanwhile, the city of Santo Domingo is boiling with unrest. An observer for the Organization of American States says stability will only come to the capital of the Dominican Republic if Juan Bosch pledges his support to the newly elected government.

On Friday -- two days after the election -- there was an outbreak of violence in Santo Domingo.

In the old section of the city impatient and youthful mobs, most of them representing the extreme left fringe of Mr. Bosch's support, gathered to chant slogans and taunt the police. In one incident near Indepencia Park the police responded to rock throwing by firing several shots. Two persons were grazed by the bullets but neither required hospitalization.
