    MR. CLIFFORD DUPONT, A FORMER LONDON LAWYER, WAS SWORN IN AS FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE RHODESIAN REPUBLIC IN SALISBURY ON THURSDAY (16 APRIL).

    THE CEREMONY TOOK PLACE AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE -- THE FORMER HOME OF BRITISH GOVERNORS -- WHERE 65 YEAR OLD MR. DUPONT TOOK TWO OATHS BEFORE THE ACTING CHIEF JUSTICE MR. JUSTICE HECTOR MACDONALD.

    THE CAMBRIDGE EDUCATED LONDONER DECIDED TO SETTLE IN RHODESIA AFTER A VISIT IN 1947 AND BECAME A TOBACCO FARMER. HE ENTERED POLITICS IN 1958 AND ROSE TO THE CHAIRMANSHIP OF THE RHODESIAN FRONT PARTY.

    AFTER THE COUNTRY'S UNILATERAL DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE IN 1965 MR. DUPONT WAS APPOINTED OFFICER ADMINISTERING THE GOVERNMENT. WHEN THE COUNTRY SEVERED ITS LAST LINKS WITH THE BRITISH CROWN BY OPTING FOR FULL REPUBLICAN STATUS LAST MONTH HE BECAME ACTING PRESIDENT OF RHODESIA.
