  • Description

Libyan Prime Minster Abdel Salam Jalloud arrived in Rome on Thursday (21 February) for important talks on the oil situation with Italian government officials.

Libya, through Mr. Jalloud, has already entered an oil-for-trade agreement with France reputedly involving as much as 25,000 million francs (2,300 million pounds sterling). Libya, too, has nationalised three United States oil companies in the country. Prime Minister Jalloud has in recent weeks, met with the Prime Ministers of Poland and Czechoslovakia to talk about co-operation and technology in exchange for oil trade.

Prime Minister Jalloud's visit to Italy is timely. The Italian government has raised petrol prices three times in the last five months. A number of Italian ministers are currently the subject of impeachment proceeding following allegations of bribes from oilmen. The latest petrol price rise of thirty per cent in Italy was announced at the same time as restrictions on Sunday motoring were eased.

Prime Minister Jalloud will have several meetings with h is Italian counterpart, Prime Minister Mariano Rumor who met him at the airport when he arrived.
