  • Description

AN UNPRECEDENTED ENDURANCE TEST TOOK PLACE ON MONT BLANC RECENTLY, WHEN 115 FRENCH SOLDIERS CLIMBED EUROPE'S HIGHEST MOUNTAIN AND HOISTED THEIR UNIT'S FLAG ON THE SUMMIT.

PLANNED BY THE MILITARY ACADEMY FOR HIGH CLIMBING, THE EXPEDITION WAS SPLIT INTO TWO GROUPS. 85 SOLDIERS CLIMBED FROM THE BOUTET REFUGE TO THE VALLOT REFUGE, WHERE THEY WERE JOINED BY 32 OTHERS WHO CLIMBED BY THE SAME ROUTE LATER.

FROM THE COMPARATIVE COMFORT OF THE ROCKY LOWER RANGES THE MEN CLIMBED UP THROUGH EXTREME COLD AND STRONG WINDS. THE FACT THAT NONE HAD RECEIVED SPECIAL TRAINING FOR THE CLIMB, AND THAT ONLY TWO WITHDREW, RATES THE EXPEDITION A GREAT SUCCESS.

SENIOR OFFICERS ARRIVED AFTERWARDS BY HELICOPTER, AND IN A SUMMIT CEREMONY, THEY HOISTED THE FLAG OF THEIR UNIT - THE 13TH BATTALION DES CHASSEURS TROOPS ALPINS - AND THAT OF THE ANCIENS CHASSEURS DE CHAMONIX, WHICH WAS CARRIED ON THE CLIMB BY M. GERARD COUTET, THEIR REPRESENTATIVE.
