  • Description

PRESIDENT LEOPOLD SENGHOR OF SENEGAL, THE ONLY CANDIDATE IN SUNDAY'S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS, WAS RETURNED TO POWER WITH 93 PERCENT OF THE VOTES CAST. AND THE PRESIDENT'S PROGRESSIVE SENEGALESE NATIONAL UNION RECEIVED 92 PERCENT SUPPORT FOR RE-ELECTION TO THE 80-MAN SENEGALESE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY.

PROVISIONAL FIGURES SHOW THAT SOME 1,200,000 OF THE COUNTRY'S REGISTERED ELECTORS TURNED OUT TO CAST THEIR VOTES, OUT OF A TOTAL OF 1,271,000.

VOTING WAS PEACEFUL, DESPITE PAMPHLETS AND TRACTS HANDED OUT AT THE POLLING STATIONS BY MEMBERS OF THE DEMOCRATIC UNION OF STUDENTS CALLING FOR VOTERS TO STAY AWAY FROM THE POLLS.

SUNDAY'S ELECTION WAS THE FIRST IN SENEGAL TO BE HELD UNDER A ONE-PARTY SYSTEM. THE PROGRESSIVE NATIONAL UNION BECAME THE ONLY POLITICAL GROUPING IN THE COUNTRY FOLLOWING LAST YEAR'S INTEGRATION OF THE SENEGAL PARTY AND THE NATIONAL SENEGALESE FRONT PARTY.

AMONG THE EARLY VOTERS TO THE POLLING STATIONS WAS THE PRESIDENT HIMSELF AND MADAME SENGHOR, WHO WENT TO THEIR LOCAL STATION AT AVENUE ALBERT SARRAUT IN DAKAR.

PRESIDENT SENGHOR HAS LED HIS COUNTRY SINCE IT BECAME AN INDEPENDENT STATE IN 1960 AND IS ONE OF AFRICA'S MOST EXPERIENCED AND INFLUENTIAL HEADS OF STATE. HE WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT FOR A SECOND TIME IN 1963, AND HAS NOW BEEN GIVEN A MANDATE TO LEAD SENEGAL FOR A THIRD TIME.
