    Ludmilla Pakhomova and Alexander Gorshkov of the Soviet Union won the first ever Gold Medal for ice dancing at the Innsbruck Olympic on Monday ( 9 February).

    Their win came as no surprise. The pair has won the World Championship five years running from 1970 to 1974.

    The Soviet husband and wife team, both 27, beat team mats Irina Moiseeva and Andrei Minenkov into second place.

    The bronze medal went to America's Colleen O'Connor and Jim Millns, who prevented a Soviet sweep of the top placings by outscoring Natalia Linichuk and Gennadi Karponosov, who were fourth.

    She had her husband were heavily favoured for the title after taking both the compulsory dance and the original set pattern programmes.

    Their free skating routine drew solid scores of 5.9 from all the judges for technical merit and a perfect six from the Soviet judge for artistic perfection.

    Their dance to the "Gypsy Tango" was the highlight of the programme and brought great applause from the crowd.

    SYNOPSIS: After taking out both the preliminary programmes in the ice dancing at the Innsbruck Olympics, favourites for the gold medal were Soviet Union husband and wife pair, Ludmilla Pakhomova and Alexander Gorshkov. And they didn't disappoint their supporters in the free skating routine on Monday.

    The winning pair added the Gold Medal to the five world championship they won five years running between nineteen seventy and nineteen seventy four. This was the first time ice dancing had been included in the Olympics.

    Irina Moiseeva and Andrei Minenkov of the Soviet Union were second, and American pair Colleen O'Connor and Jim Millns stopped a Soviet sweep of the to placings by winning the bronze medal.
