  • Description

THE RED SUN OF JAPAN'S NATIONAL FLAG NOW FLIES GAILY 1,000 MILES (1,600 KMS) OUT INTO THE WESTERN PACIFIC OVER 30 SMALL ISLANDS THAT HAD BEEN UNDER AMERICAN CONTROL FOR 25 YEARS. THE ISLANDS, 600 MILES (960 KMS) SOUTH OF TOKYO INCLUDE IWO JIMA WHERE 30,000 AMERICANS AND JAPANESE DIED IN BITTER FIGHTING IN THE LAST WEEKS OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR, AND THE BONIN ISLANDS.

HANDING OVER CEREMONIES TOOK PLACE AT MIDDAY ON THREE OF THE 30 PALK-FRINGED ISLETS. THE CEREMONIES WERE SIMPLE AND BRIEF.

AT IWO JIMA THERE WAS A MILITARY PARADE AND A BUGLER AS THE AMERICAN FLAG WAS LOWERED AND REPLACED BY THAT OF JAPAN.

OUTWARD SIGNS OF THE CHANCE OF JURISDICTION INCLUDED THE ADVANCING OF THE CLOCK BY TWO HOURS TO CONFORM WITH JAPANESE STANDARD TIME, AND ORDERING THE II VEHICLES ON CHICHI JIMA TO DRIVE ON THE LEFT INSTEAD OF THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD.

THE UNITED STATES, UNDER THE REVERSION AGREEMENT, WHICH WAS SIGNED IN TOKYO LAST APRIL, WILL CONTINUE TO USE THE LONG - RANGE NAVIGATION STATION ON IOWA JIMA AND MINAMI TORASHIMA ISLANDS.

THE BONIN ISLANDS WILL BE KNOWN IN FUTURE BY THEIR JAPANESE NAME -- THE OGASAWARA GROUP -- AFTER THE ORIGINAL DISCOVER SADAYORI OGASAWARA, WHO LANDED THERE IN 1592.
