Background: Despite some upsets on the final day of competition, host country Ghana topped the medal table in the Athletics competition of the Africa University Games in Accra on Friday (January 3).

Ghana finished the competition with nine gold, ten silver and 11 bronze medals. Their great athletics rivals, Nigeria, were second with eight gold, seven silver and eight bronze. But despite the success of these two countries in track and field events, they still lag far behind Egypt in the overall Games medals table.

Nigeria started Friday well when T. Ogunjobi returned a time of 54.8 secs to win the 400 metres hurdles.

Ghana struck gold in the men's high jump. K.R. Adams won with a leap of 1.94 metres.

But the biggest surprise of the day came in the men's 100 metres.

Ghana's sprint king George Daniels was beaten into third place by Ivorian runners A. Maite and Konley Lagon. Maite won in 10.6 seconds, and helped the Ivory Coast to take third place in the athletics medals table.
