  • Description

Akio Usami of Japan led throughout to win the Annual Athens International Marathon yesterday (6 April). Usami was the favourite to win the race and finished two and a half minutes ahead of Australian John Farrington, who finished second. Jack Foster of New Zealand came in third. The race, which covers a distance of 26 miles 385 yards (42 kilometres 195 metres) from Marathon to Athens, is run over the same course that some 2500 years ago the young Athenian warrior, Pheidippides, ran to announce the Greek army's win over the Persians. He died of exhaustion immediately afterwards. A total of 71 runners from 16 countries took part in this year's event.
