AMERICAN OFFICIALS WERE CONFIDENT TODAY (FRIDAY) THAT THE RANGER SIX SPACECRAFT "WOULD PROBABLY HIT THE MOON" AFTER RADIOED INSTRUCTIONS HAD BOOSTED ITS SPEED AND CORRECTED ITS COURSE."
A RADIO SIGNAL HAD IGNITED THE RANGER'S STEERING ENGINE AND IT IS HOPED THE BOOSTER WILL SUFFICIENTLY INCREASE THE CRAFT'S SPEED TO GUIDE IT TOWARDS THE MIDDLE OF THE MOON, WHERE IT SHOULD LAND EARLY SUNDAY MORNING.

THIS WAS THE SCENE YESTERDAY WHEN THE CAMERA LADEN ROCKET WAS LAUNCHED FROM CAPE KENNEDY. IF ALL GOES ACCORDING TO SCHEDULE THE RANGER WILL TAKE SOME 3,000 PICTURES OF THE MOON'S SURFACE WHERE AN AMERICAN ASTRONAUT MAY LAND SOME FIVE YEARS FROM NOW. THE PICTURES WILL BE TAKEN BY SIX TELEVISION CAMERAS HOUSED IN THE SPACECRAFT'S NOSE, DURING THE LAST 10 MINUTES OF ITS FLIGHT.

IF THIS RANGER LUNAR SHOT SUCCEEDS IT WILL BE AMERICA'S FIRST. THERE HAVE BEEN ELEVEN PREVIOUS AMERICAN MOONSHOTS AND THY HAVE ALL FAILED.

A SUCCESSFUL RANGER MISSION, COUPLED WITH WEDNESDAY'S SMOOTH FIRING OF THE MIKE SATURN ROCKET, WOULD MEAN A MAJOR STEP FROWARD IN AMERICA'S PLANS FOR A MANNED LUNAR LANDING BEFORE 1970.
