  • Description

Bolivian President Hugo Banzer announced on Wednesday (9 November) that general elections would be held next July, ending seven years of military rule. In a radio and television broadcast from La Paz President Banzer also said a three-year ban on political activities was being lifted.

SYNOPSIS: A Bolivian newspaper, Presencia, said 50-year-old President Banzer would step down as head of state before the end of the year to stand as a candidate in the general election.

According to Presencia the army general staff agreed that interior Minister Juan Pereda would take over as provisional President. General Banzer would retire from active army service or ask for indefinite leave.

The resumption of political activity would not at first include left-wing parties banned after General Banzer seized power in 1971. But General Pereda said in an interview published in the newspaper El Diario that the ban would be ended and an amnesty declared for left-wing prisoners.
