Background: THE JAPANESE DEFENCE AGENCY, CONTINUING ITS TESTING OF THE ATMOSPHERE FOLLOWING THE EXPLOSION AT THE WEEKEND OF A HYDROGEN BOMB BY THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA, HAS MADE HIGH-ALTITUDE TESTS, USING JET FIGHTERS TO COLLECT SAMPLES.

FLYING FROM TSUKUSHI AIR BASE IN WESTERN JAPAN, F-86 JETS WITH SPECIALLY-PREPARED GUMMED PAPER FIXED TO THE LEADING EDGES OF THEIR WINGS, PATROLLED AT A HEIGHT OF 30,000 FEET IN AN AIR STREAM WHICH WAS THOUGHT LIKELY TO CARRY ANY RADIO-ACTIVE PARTICLES FROM THE CHINESE MAINLAND.

THE GUMMED PAPER WAS LATER ANALYSED AT THE JAPANESE RADIO-ACTIVITY COUNTERMEASURES HEADQUARTERS. NO REPORTS OF THEIR FINDINGS HAVE YET BEEN MADE.

SIMILAR FLIGHTS ARE BEING MADE DAILY FROM TSUKUSHI AND OTHER AIR BASES IN WESTERN JAPAN.
