Background: Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands arrived in the Tanzanian capital, Dar es Salaam Tuesday (11 July) at the start of a seven-day state visit. During their stay the Queen and Prince were expected to tour the wildlife reserves around the northern town of Arusha, inspect various projects financed by Dutch aid including maternity clinics and factories and visit the designated new capital city of Tanzania, Dodoma.

SYNOPSIS: There was an enthusiastic welcome awaiting Queen Juliana and her husband at Dar es Salaam airport. They had arrived in Tanzania the previous night (10 July) at Arusha, where they were met by the Prime Minister, Ndugu Edward Sokoine. Prince Bernhard piloted the aircraft from Arusha and as the royal couple stepped onto the red carpet, they were greeted by Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere. Prince Bernhard has toured Tanzania before, but it was the Queen's first visit.

Later, during a state banquet held in honour of the visit, President Nyerere praised the Netherlands for reaching the United Nations target of providing seven percent of gross national earnings for aid to developing countries. President Nyerere pointed out that the Netherlands had in fact exceeded this proportion and that Tanzania was the largest single recipient of Dutch aid.
