  • Description

Pope John Paul the Second continued to draw massive crowds in Mexico on Tuesday (30 January). Thousands of singing and cheering Mexicans packed ten blocks on both sides of a school the Pope was to visit, making it impossible for the Pope's motorcade to get through.

SYNOPSIS: Eventually the Pope was forced to arrive at Miguel Angel Institute by helicopter. Police reported that it was impossible for the Papal motorcade to breach what they called "a human wall".

The now familiar cries of "El Papa, El Papa" rang out from the crowd as the Pope clapped his hands in rhythm to the cheers and spread his arms wide apart as if to embrace the multitude. An announcer tried to quiet the singing devotees, saying "silence, the voice of Christ speaks".

In his address the Pope called for an urgent solution to Latin America's problems of illiteracy, saying everyone had an inalienable right to education. He said youth were the hope of the world. The Pope leaves Mexico on Wednesday (31 January) and will return to Rome after a short stopover in Monterrey.
