Background: In the Australian state of Tasmania, an energetic conservation group is having its share of success.

SYNOPSIS: The group is the National Trust of Australia, a non-profit organisation with branches in each state.

Committed to the preservation of historic buildings, sites and scenic areas, the National Trust has been most successful in Tasmania.

The island state served as a dumping ground for convicts, and many buildings remain today as a reminder of that Colonial period. One of its most elegant mansions is Franklin House. The National trust was established in Tasmania in 1960 for the specific purpose of preserving and restoring Franklin House.

Its success has inspired further efforts throughout the state. The Landed Gentry of early Australia lived well, as evidenced by Entally House, complete with barn, stable and servants quarters.

With less than two hundred years of European settlement, Australia's recorded history is comparatively recent. In Tasmania, many early buildings still remain despite the country's rapid development.

Hobart's freestone bond stores, built by convict labour, now provide a backdrop to regular street fairs.

Within the buildings, craft stores, restaurants and antique shops help preserve the living history.

Perhaps the grimmest reminder of Tasmania's beginnings lies in the partly-restored ruins of Port Arthur.

The serenity of Port Arthur's surroundings belies the hardships suffered by more than twelve thousand prisoners who served time here.

Port Arthur is dominated by the sandstone remains of its Gothic Church. The National Trust....preserving history in Tasmania, Australia.
